AEC’s master plan for a sustainable residential community near Phnom Penh looks to set a new benchmark for ecologically sensitive development in Cambodia. Inspired by nature, Cambodia’s national flower Rumduol, the design began as different ideas of the shape of the Rumdoul flower petals. In part, the petals were arranged like a leaf cluster with and open space in center. The buildings opens up and embraces the users as a new language of architecture.

The plan covers 18 hectares along the NR3 and incorporates a wide range of uses organized by district. These districts include residential neighborhoods, a retail zone, and a designated area for wellness, sports, and leisure. As the climate in Cambodia is one of the wettest and most humid in the world we are carefully designing buildings that turn these conditions into positive, human comfort strategies.

 

AEC’s plan addresses the site’s critical flood risks through a series of forward-looking stormwater strategies that preserve existing watercourses and natural landscapes. New terraced levels will integrate development into the site and will ensure flood protection. The landscape design centers on a series of open spaces and linear parks that form the versatile heart of the development. Visually interesting routes, redolent of the site’s green context, intersect the plan; and landscaped spaces draw inspiration from local archaeology, history and agricultural patterns.

 

The master plan expands and reinforces the verdant character of Cambodia tropical landscape. It establishes a new water ponds designed to restore, protect, and enhance the wildlife habitat. This park will connect to a network of linear greenways for recreation and stormwater management. Moreover, public spaces are incorporated into each developed areas, assuring all residents are within a short walk to a shaded area.
